# Humbucker neck and bridge with a three-way toggle

Canonical page: https://guitarwiring.app/wiring-diagrams/dimarzio/humbucker-neck-and-bridge-three-way-toggle

Two humbuckers · Three-way toggle · One volume · One tone

DiMarzio's HH layout: neck and bridge humbuckers on a Switchcraft three-way toggle whose two output tags are joined by a jumper, then 500K custom-taper volume and tone pots with a .022 µF capacitor.

## Parts and values

- Neck pickup: Neck pickup (BARE, GREEN, RED, BLACK, WHITE); generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, DiMarzio colours))
- Bridge pickup: Bridge pickup (BARE, GREEN, RED, BLACK, WHITE); generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, DiMarzio colours))
- Toggle (straight / straight short): Switchcraft toggle switch, straight or straight short (EP1101/EP1102); compatible example (Switchcraft 3-Way Toggle (two output tags))
- Volume 500K custom taper: Volume 500K custom taper pot (EP1201); 500k; compatible example (CTS 500k Audio Pot)
- Tone 500K custom taper: Tone 500K custom taper pot (EP1201); 500k; compatible example (CTS 500k Audio Pot)
- Output jack: Switchcraft output jack, 2-conductor (EP1301); compatible example (Switchcraft \#11)
- .022µF: .022µF capacitor (EP1022); 22nF; compatible example (Orange Drop .022µF)
- Bridge ground: TO BRIDGE GROUND; generic (Bridge ground wire)

## Specific to this wiring

- Position 1 = neck; position 2 = neck and bridge; position 3 = bridge.
- On each pickup, the black and white leads are joined and insulated.
- Join the toggle's two output tags with a short jumper, as drawn.
- The tone signal enters at the tone pot's middle lug (wiper); the capacitor sits on an end lug.
- The source specifies 500K custom-taper pots. The simulator treats them as linear, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.

## Connections

1. Neck GREEN → Volume casing (case, green)
2. Neck BARE → Volume casing (shield, bare)
3. Bridge GREEN → Volume casing (case, green)
4. Bridge BARE → Volume casing (shield, bare)
5. Toggle middle-left tag → Jack sleeve (wire, black)
6. Volume top lug → Volume casing (case, black)
7. Volume top lug → Tone casing (case, black): The tone casing also carries a ground symbol.
8. .022µF capacitor → Tone casing (case)
9. Tone casing → Jack sleeve (wire, black)
10. TO BRIDGE GROUND → Jack sleeve (shield, black): The jack sleeve also carries a ground symbol.
11. Neck RED → Toggle top-left tag (wire, red)
12. Bridge RED → Toggle bottom-left tag (wire, red)
13. Toggle upper right tag → Toggle lower right tag (bridge): External jumper joining the two output tags.
14. Toggle output → Volume bottom lug (input) (wire)
15. Neck BLACK → Neck WHITE (insulated, black): Joined and insulated.
16. Bridge BLACK → Bridge WHITE (insulated, black): Joined and insulated.
17. Volume middle lug → Jack tip (wire)
18. Volume bottom lug → Tone middle lug (wiper) (wire)
19. Tone bottom lug → .022µF capacitor (wire)

## What each position does

- Rhythm (neck): Neck pickup (both coils). Source: Position 1 = neck.
- Both: Neck pickup (both coils) and Bridge pickup (both coils) in parallel. Source: Position 2 = neck & bridge.
- Treble (bridge): Bridge pickup (both coils). Source: Position 3 = bridge.

- The source's 500K custom taper is not reproduced: both pots are simulated with a linear track, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.
- Hum cancelling and phase describe the generic pickup models, not measured DiMarzio pickups.
- Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

## Check before plugging in

- In each toggle position, the meter across the jack should read the selected pickup, or both in parallel in the middle.
- The two jumpered toggle output tags should always read as a short to each other.
- Each taped black–white joint should read open to ground.
