# Rail Hum-Canceling Tele with two rail pickups

Two rail-style four-conductor pickups · Three-way Tele switch · One volume · One tone

DiMarzio's Rail Hum-Canceling Tele harness with an Area T neck and The Chopper T bridge, both drawn as four-conductor rail pickups on a three-way Tele switch. It uses 250K custom-taper volume and tone pots, a .022 µF capacitor and a Switchcraft two-conductor jack.

## Parts and values

- Area T neck: Area T™ neck DP417 (RED, WHITE, BLACK, GREEN, GRAY); generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, DiMarzio colours))
- Chopper T bridge: The Chopper T™ bridge DP384 (RED, WHITE, BLACK, GREEN, BARE); generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, DiMarzio colours))
- Three-way switch: Three-way switch for Tele® (EP1105); compatible example (CRL 3-Way Blade)
- Volume 250K custom taper: Volume 250K custom taper pot (EP1200); 250k; compatible example (CTS 250k Audio Pot)
- Tone 250K custom taper: Tone 250K custom taper pot (EP1200); 250k; compatible example (CTS 250k Audio Pot)
- .022µF: .022µF capacitor (EP1022); 22nF; compatible example (Orange Drop .022µF)
- Output jack: Switchcraft® output jack, 2-conductor (EP1301); compatible example (Switchcraft \#11)
- Bridge ground: TO BRIDGE GROUND; generic (Bridge ground wire)

## Specific to this wiring

- On the Area T neck, the black and white leads are joined; the green and gray leads go to the volume casing; the red lead goes to the switch.
- On The Chopper T bridge, the red and green leads are joined; the white and bare leads go to the volume casing; the black lead goes to the switch.
- The tone signal enters at the tone pot's middle lug (wiper) from the volume wiper; the capacitor sits on an end lug.
- The switch tags are not labelled, so they are mapped by what each does.
- The source specifies custom-taper pots. The simulator treats them as linear, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.

## Connections

1. Neck green → Volume casing (case, green)
2. Neck gray → Volume casing (shield, bare): Drawn thin grey beside the green; mapped to the stand-in bare pad.
3. Bridge white → Volume casing (case, white)
4. Bridge bare shield → Volume casing (shield, bare): Drawn thin grey beside the white.
5. Volume casing → Volume top lug (case, black)
6. Volume top lug → Tone casing (case, black)
7. .022 µF capacitor → Tone casing (case)
8. Tone casing → Jack sleeve (wire, black)
9. Bridge ground wire → Jack sleeve (wire, black): Labelled TO BRIDGE GROUND.
10. Neck red → Switch top-row first lug (wire, red)
11. Bridge black → Switch bottom-row fourth lug (wire, black): Hot on this sheet.
12. Switch bottom-row first lug → Switch bottom-row second lug (bridge, grey)
13. Switch bottom-row second lug → Switch top-row third lug (bridge, grey)
14. Switch top-row third lug → Switch top-row fourth lug (bridge, grey)
15. Switch top-row fourth lug → Volume bottom lug (input) (wire, grey)
16. Neck black → Neck white (insulated, black): Joined at one solder dot with nothing else on it.
17. Bridge red → Bridge green (insulated, red): Joined at one solder dot with nothing else on it.
18. Volume middle lug → Jack tip (wire, dark grey)
19. Volume middle lug → Tone middle lug (wire, black)
20. Tone bottom lug → .022 µF capacitor (wire)

## What each position does

- Neck: Area T neck (both coils).
- Neck and bridge: Area T neck (both coils) and Chopper T bridge (both coils) in parallel.
- Bridge: Chopper T bridge (both coils).

- The source's custom-taper pots are not reproduced: both pots are simulated with a linear track, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.
- Both rail pickups are simulated as generic side-by-side four-conductor humbuckers; hum cancelling and phase describe the generic pickup models, not measured DiMarzio pickups.
- Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

## Check before plugging in

- Position 1: continuity from jack tip to sleeve through the neck pickup only.
- Position 3: continuity through the bridge pickup only.
- The taped series joints on both pickups should read open to ground.
