# One humbucker with a push/pull coil split

One humbucker · Push/pull volume · One tone

A single humbucker with a volume that doubles as a coil split: pull the knob to ground the link between the two coils and hear one coil on its own. It needs a 500k push/pull pot, a 500k tone pot, a .047 µF capacitor and a mono jack.

- Bridge humbucker: Bridge Pickup (four-conductor); generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, Seymour Duncan colours))
- Volume (push/pull): Volume 500k push/pull; 500k; compatible example (500k Push-Pull DPDT)
- Tone: Tone 500k; 500k; compatible example (CTS 500k Audio Pot)
- .047 µF tone cap: .047 cap; 47nF; compatible example (Orange Drop .047µF)
- Output jack: Output Jack; compatible example (Switchcraft \#11)

## Specific to this wiring

- The humbucker's red and white leads are soldered together onto the push/pull's middle left lug, not taped off.
- Only one side of the push/pull switch is used; the other three lugs stay empty.
- The lower left switch lug, nearest the pot, goes to the volume casing. That grounds the coil link when the knob is pulled.
- The bridge ground wire goes to the volume casing.

## Connections

1. Push/pull bottom left lug → Volume casing (case, black)
2. Pickup green → Volume casing (case, green)
3. Pickup bare → Volume casing (shield, bare)
4. Volume right lug → Volume casing (case): Lug bent onto the casing.
5. .047 cap → Tone casing (case)
6. Volume casing → Tone casing (case, black)
7. Tone casing → Jack sleeve (wire, black)
8. Pickup white → Push/pull middle left lug (wire, white)
9. Pickup red → Push/pull middle left lug (wire, red): Shares the lug with the white lead.
10. Pickup black → Volume left lug (input) (wire, black)
11. Volume middle lug → Jack tip (wire, black)
12. Volume left lug → Tone left lug (wire, black)
13. Tone middle lug → .047 cap (wire)
14. Bridge ground wire → Volume casing (wire), listed, not drawn: Drawn leaving the page towards the bridge.

## What each position does

- Knob pushed down: full humbucker: Bridge humbucker (both coils). Source: Coil link floating: both coils in series.
- Knob pulled up: single coil: Bridge humbucker (split to one coil). Source: Coil link grounded: the push/pull coil split.

- Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.
- The source does not say which knob position splits; this follows the usual push/pull behaviour (pulled joins the middle lugs to the lugs nearest the pot).

## Check before plugging in

- Knob down: tip to sleeve reads the full humbucker's resistance.
- Knob up: the reading drops to roughly one coil's resistance.
- With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve should read as a short in both knob positions.
