# Two humbuckers with a three-way blade and a push/pull phase volume

Two humbuckers · Three-way blade · One push/pull volume (phase)

Neck and bridge Seymour Duncan humbuckers on a three-way blade and one 500k volume. The volume's push/pull switch reverses the neck pickup's black and green leads, so with the blade in the middle, pulling the knob puts the two pickups out of phase.

## Parts and values

- Neck pickup: Seymour Duncan Neck Pickup; generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, Seymour Duncan colours))
- Bridge pickup: Seymour Duncan Bridge Pickup; generic (Humbucker (four-conductor, Seymour Duncan colours))
- 3-Way Blade Switch: 3 Way Blade; compatible example (CRL 3-Way Blade)
- Volume 500k (push/pull phase): Volume 500k / Phase Switch; 500k; compatible example (500k Push-Pull DPDT)
- Output Jack: Output Jack; compatible example (Switchcraft \#11)
- Bridge Ground Wire: Bridge ground wire; generic (Bridge ground wire)

## Specific to this wiring

- On each pickup, solder the red and white leads together and tape them off.
- The neck black and green leads go to the two middle lugs of the push/pull switch; its outer lugs are cross-jumpered in an X so pulling the knob swaps them.
- The push/pull lug nearest the pot on the black side goes to the volume casing; the top lug on the same side goes to the blade's neck common.
- The neck bare wire goes to the volume casing, not through the switch.
- The grey 'Solder' spot marks the ground (earth) connections; the bridge ground wire goes to the volume casing.
- The source does not number the switch positions; the lugs are mapped by what they do (neck, both, bridge).

## Connections

1. Neck green → Push/pull right middle lug (wire, green)
2. Neck bare → Volume casing (shield, bare): Drawn grey, looping round the right side to the solder spot.
3. Bridge green → Volume casing (case, green)
4. Bridge bare → Volume casing (shield, bare): Drawn grey, running with the green.
5. Push/pull left lug nearest the pot → Volume casing (case, black)
6. Volume right lug → Volume casing (case): Lug bent onto the casing.
7. Volume casing → Jack sleeve (case, black)
8. Bridge ground wire → Volume casing (shield, black): 'Bridge ground wire' ends on the volume's solder spot.
9. Bridge black → Blade lower row, rightmost lug (common) (wire, black)
10. Push/pull left top lug → Blade upper row, leftmost lug (common) (wire, black): Runs across the top of the blade.
11. Blade lower row, first lug → Blade lower row, second lug (bridge, black)
12. Blade lower row, second lug → Blade upper row, third lug (bridge, black)
13. Blade upper row, third lug → Blade upper row, rightmost lug (bridge, black)
14. Blade upper row, rightmost lug → Volume left lug (input) (wire, black): Hops the bridge ground leads on its way down.
15. Neck red → Neck white (insulated, red): Neck red and white end in the taped joint at the upper right.
16. Neck black → Push/pull left middle lug (wire, black): Hops the blade wire on its way to the switch.
17. Bridge red → Bridge white (insulated, red): Bridge red and white end in the taped joint below the blade.
18. Push/pull left top lug → Push/pull right lug nearest the pot (bridge, black): One leg of the X jumper.
19. Push/pull right top lug → Push/pull left lug nearest the pot (bridge, black): The other leg of the X jumper.
20. Volume middle lug → Jack tip (wire, black): Hops the sleeve wire where the two cross.

## What each position does

- Neck, knob down: Neck pickup (both coils). Source: Neck pickup, normal phase.
- Both, knob down: in phase: Neck pickup (both coils) and Bridge pickup (both coils) in parallel. Source: Neck and bridge together, in phase.
- Bridge, knob down: Bridge pickup (both coils). Source: Bridge pickup.
- Neck, knob pulled: neck reversed: Neck pickup (both coils). Source: The neck's leads are swapped; on its own it sounds the same as knob down.
- Both, knob pulled: out of phase: Neck pickup (both coils) and Bridge pickup (both coils) in parallel. Source: Neck reversed against the bridge: the phase switch.
- Bridge, knob pulled: Bridge pickup (both coils). Source: The bridge does not pass through the push/pull.

- Hum cancelling and phase describe the generic pickup models, not a measurement of any specific Seymour Duncan model.
- Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.
- The source does not say which knob position reverses the phase; this follows the usual push/pull behaviour (pulled joins the middle lugs to the lugs nearest the pot).

## Check before plugging in

- In each blade position, the meter across the jack should read the selected pickup, or both in parallel in the middle, with the knob up or down.
- Knob pulled: the neck green lead should read continuity to the blade's neck lug and the neck black lead to ground.
- Each taped red–white joint should read open to ground.
