Telecaster with two tapped single coils and a push/pull tap volume

Two tapped single coils · Three-way blade · Push/pull volume (coil tap) · One tone

Standard Telecaster three-way switching with tapped neck and bridge single coils. One push/pull on the 250k volume taps both pickups at once. One 250k tone with a .047 µF capacitor.

“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • Sheet title: Tele | 2 tapped single coils, 1 volume push/pull coil tap, 1 tone | 3 way blade.
  • Each pickup's White and Red leads go to one column of the push/pull (neck on the left column, bridge on the right), white on the top lug and red on the bottom lug. Each column's middle lug runs to one of the blade's commons.
  • The sheet prints no push/pull settings legend and does not say which lead is the tap. Red is taken as the tap and white as the full-coil hot: red sits on the lugs nearest the pot, which join the middle row when the knob is pulled. These are the same lead colours and lug positions as Seymour Duncan's single-tapped Tele push/pull sheet.
  • Both Black leads go to the volume Solder spot.
  • The blade lugs are not numbered on the sheet; they are mapped by what they do (neck, both, bridge), as on the standard Tele sheet. Two lugs are drawn empty.
  • Source legend: the grey 'Solder' spot = location for ground (earth) connections.
  • The volume's right lug is drawn bent up onto the casing under the Solder spot.
  • The volume and tone Solder spots are joined by a line drawn dashed.
  • Tip (hot output). Sleeve (ground): this is the inner, circular portion of the jack.

Connections

In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.

  • Which lead is the tap and which knob position taps are not printed on this sheet; the expected states assume red = tap and pulled = tapped (see notes).
  • The tapped single coils are modelled as two coil sections; the tap point's turns ratio and output level are not specified.
  • Pickup resistance and magnet polarity are not specified, so no numeric meter readings or hum-cancelling claims are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • In each blade position with the knob down, the meter across the jack should read the neck, both in parallel, or the bridge at full output.
  • Pull the knob: each engaged pickup's reading should drop to its tapped section.
  • With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve should read as a short.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
