Three humbuckers with a three-way toggle, three volumes and one tone

Three humbuckers · Three-way toggle · Three volumes · One master tone

Neck, middle and bridge Seymour Duncan humbuckers, each with its own 500k volume. The toggle picks neck, both or bridge; the middle pickup's volume sits on the output line, so the middle pickup is on in every toggle position. One 500k master tone with a .047 µF capacitor. The red and white leads on each pickup are joined and taped off.

“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • Sheet title: 3 humbuckers | 3 volumes, 1 tone | 3 way toggle.
  • Red & White wires get soldered together and taped off (printed once, applies to the taped sleeve on each pickup).
  • On every volume the pickup's black lead goes to the middle lug and the right lug is drawn bent back onto the casing; the left lug is the volume's output.
  • The bridge volume's left lug feeds the toggle's left lower lug and the neck volume's left lug feeds the toggle's right lower lug. The toggle's middle lug goes to the tone's middle lug and on to the middle volume's left lug, which also goes to the jack tip. So the middle pickup is on in every toggle position; this is read from the drawn wiring, as the sheet prints no position legend.
  • The .047 cap sits between the tone's left lug (tone drawn lugs up) and the tone's Solder spot. The tone's third lug is not connected.
  • Ground chain as drawn: toggle top lug to the bridge volume Solder spot, bridge volume casing to tone casing, tone casing to the middle volume's upper Solder spot, middle volume casing to neck volume casing. The jack Sleeve and the Bridge Ground Wire both end on the tone Solder spot.
  • The toggle tags are not labelled in the source, so they are mapped by function.
  • Source legend: the grey 'Solder' spot = location for ground (earth) connections.
  • Tip (hot output). Sleeve (ground): the inner, circular portion of the jack.

Connections

In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

What each position does

SettingThe sourceEngine result
Neck + middleRead from the drawn wiring: the bridge volume feeds the toggle's left lower lug, the neck volume its right lower lug, and the toggle's middle lug joins the middle volume's output lug, which goes to the jack tip. The sheet prints no position legend.Neck pickup (both coils) and Middle pickup (both coils) in parallel.

Not simulated: this circuit is drawn for reference only.

  • The middle pickup reaches the jack in every toggle position, as drawn, which the toggle's neck / both / bridge slot roles do not describe; see ruleExceptions.
  • Each pickup feeds its volume's wiper with the output taken from an end lug; the engine does not report the neck or middle volume as the volume control. Volume behaviour is not verified.
  • The engine's per-position pickup selection agrees with every expected state listed, but the board is published topology-only.
  • Hum cancelling and phase describe the generic pickup models; pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • In each toggle position, a meter across the jack should read the middle pickup in parallel with the neck, both others, or the bridge.
  • Each taped red–white joint should read open to ground.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
