“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.
Specific to this wiring
- Sheet title: 3 single coils | 1 volume | 2 tone, 3 2-way mini-toggle switches. The switches are labelled ON/ON SPDT mini-toggle switches.
- Each pickup's white lead goes to its toggle's centre lug. The bottom lugs of all three toggles are chained together and on to the master volume input lug; the top lugs are chained together and on to the upper tone's solder spot (ground). So each toggle either sends its pickup to the volume or grounds it. The sheet prints no position legend; this is read from the drawn wiring.
- A second wire on the neck toggle's centre lug is the big arc that hops over the middle toggle's wire and runs down as the leftmost wire to the lower tone's first lug; a second wire on the middle toggle's centre lug runs down beside it to the upper tone's middle lug. These tones stay on their pickups whatever the toggles do.
- The .022 cap sits between the upper tone's third lug and its solder spot; the upper tone's third lug also runs to the lower tone's middle lug, so both tones share the one cap.
- Black wires from all pickups go to the master volume solder spot, as does the ground wire to the bridge.
- The master volume's third lug is drawn bent back onto its casing.
- The toggle lugs are not labelled on the sheet; they are mapped top/centre/bottom to T1/T2/T3.
- Source legend: the grey 'Solder' spot = location for ground (earth) connections.
- Tip (hot output). Sleeve (ground): the inner, circular portion of the jack.
Understand this wiring
- Reading Seymour Duncan push/pull switch diagrams
Turning the knob and pulling it do different jobs. See the actual part, then try its switch connections.
Connections
In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

What each position does
| Setting | The source | Engine result |
|---|---|---|
| All pickups off | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | No pickup reaches the output. |
| Bridge | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Bridge single coil. |
| Middle | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Middle single coil. |
| Middle + Bridge | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Middle single coil and Bridge single coil in parallel. |
| Neck | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Neck single coil. |
| Neck + Bridge | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Neck single coil and Bridge single coil in parallel. |
| Neck + Middle | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Neck single coil and Middle single coil in parallel. |
| Neck + Middle + Bridge | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). The sheet prints no position legend. | Neck single coil and Middle single coil and Bridge single coil in parallel. |
| Board at rest: Neck + Middle + Bridge | Read from the drawn wiring: each toggle's bottom-lug bus feeds the volume, its top-lug bus runs to the tone casing (ground). |
The sheet prints no position legend. | Neck single coil and Middle single coil and Bridge single coil in parallel. |
Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.
- Each mini-toggle is modelled with switchPosition: throw 1 = the grounded top-lug bus (pickup off), throw 2 = the bottom-lug bus to the volume (pickup on); the board rests with all three on. Which lever direction reaches which throw is not printed.
- The engine's per-toggle pickup selection agrees with every expected state listed.
- Pickup resistance and magnet polarity are not specified, so no numeric meter readings or hum-cancelling claims are given.
Before you solder
Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.
Check before plugging in
- With each toggle thrown to its bottom lug, a meter across the jack should read that pickup; thrown to its top lug, that pickup should read as a short to ground.
- With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve should read as a short.
Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
