“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.
Specific to this wiring
- Source legend: All Positions route through volume and tone controls. 1. Full output; 2 Tapped output; 3. Tapped output with .022uf cap for bassier tone.
- The pickup's lead roles are not printed. White is taken as the full-coil hot and Yellow as the tap: White is on the lug the legend's full-output setting uses, Yellow on the lugs the tapped settings use. Black goes to the volume Solder spot.
- The blade lugs are not numbered on the sheet, and the legend does not say which blade position is setting 1. The lugs are mapped by what they do: the right-row common feeds the volume, and the left-row common goes through the .022 cap to ground in the setting where it is jumpered to the tap.
- The pickup's Black lead hops over the switch-to-volume wire on its way to the Solder spot; the two are not joined.
- Source legend: the grey 'Solder' spot = location for ground (earth) connections. The volume has two Solder spots; the right lug is drawn bent onto the lower one.
- The volume and tone Solder spots are joined by a line drawn dashed.
- Tip (hot output). Sleeve (ground): the inner, circular portion of the jack.
Connections
In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

What each position does
| Setting | The source | Engine result |
|---|---|---|
| Tapped output with .022 µF cap | 3. Tapped output with .022uf cap for bassier tone. | Esquire bridge pickup (split to one coil). |
| Tapped output | 2 Tapped output | Esquire bridge pickup (split to one coil). |
| Full output | 1. Full output | Esquire bridge pickup (both coils). |
Not simulated: this circuit is drawn for reference only.
- Engine rule selectionReachesTip fails: the three-way blade's built-in slot expectations assume a neck pickup in position 1, while this Esquire has only the bridge pickup. The engine's per-position coil selection (tap, tap, full) matches the source legend, but the board is published topology-only.
- The engine does not describe the .022 µF capacitor to ground in the tapped-with-cap setting; its tonal effect is not simulated.
- The tapped single coil is modelled as two coil sections; the tap point's turns ratio and output level are not specified.
- Pickup resistance and magnet polarity are not specified, so no numeric meter readings or hum-cancelling claims are given.
Before you solder
Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.
Check before plugging in
- In the full-output setting the meter across the jack should read higher than in either tapped setting.
- In the tapped-with-cap setting, the tap should also read through the .022 cap to ground (open on a DC meter).
- With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve should read as a short.
Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
