Seymour Duncan wiring

Two humbuckers, three-way toggle, two push/pull split volumes, master tone and mini-toggle phase

Two humbuckers · Three-way toggle · Two push/pull volumes (coil split) · One master tone · ON/ON mini-toggle phase

Neck and bridge Seymour Duncan humbuckers, each on its own 500k push/pull volume, through a three-way toggle to one 500k master tone with a .047 cap. Each volume's push/pull splits its own pickup, and an ON/ON mini-toggle reverses the neck pickup's hot and ground to put the two pickups out of phase.

“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • The source labels the phase switch 'Up: out of phase' and 'Down: in phase'.
  • The neck black and green leads go to the two middle lugs of the phase switch; the top and bottom lugs are cross-jumpered in an X, the bottom-left lug goes to the neck volume casing and the bottom-right lug to the neck volume input.
  • The neck push/pull's split lug is wired to the phase switch lug that carries the neck green lead, not to ground.
  • On the bridge pickup the green and bare leads go straight to the bridge volume casing; a short wire joins the push/pull lug nearest the pot to the same casing.
  • On each pickup the red and white leads share the middle lug of the used push/pull row.
  • The toggle frame lug runs to the Master Tone casing; the neck and bridge volume casings are linked, and the bridge ground wire, jack sleeve and tone casing all end on the bridge volume casing.
  • The source legend marks the grey 'Solder' spots as the location for ground (earth) connections.
  • Sleeve (ground): the inner, circular portion of the jack. Tip: hot output.
  • The toggle and phase switch tags are not labelled in the source, so they are mapped by what each does.

Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.

  • Hum cancelling and phase describe the generic pickup models, not a measurement of any specific Seymour Duncan model.
  • Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.
  • The source does not say which knob position splits; this follows the usual push/pull behaviour (pulled joins the middle lug to the lug nearest the pot).
  • The phase mini-toggle is modelled with switchPosition: throw 2 (toward T3/T6) is in phase, throw 1 (toward T1/T4) reverses the neck pickup. Which lever direction reaches which throw is taken from the source's Up/Down legend, not from a lug label.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • Phase switch down, both knobs down: in each toggle position the meter across the jack reads the selected humbucker, or both in parallel in the middle.
  • Pull one knob: only that pickup's reading drops to roughly one coil's resistance.
  • Phase switch up: the neck-only reading is unchanged; in the middle position the two pickups are out of phase.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
