Colossal 5-string bass with two volumes and one tone

Two four-conductor bass pickups · No switch · Two volumes · One master tone

DiMarzio Colossal 5-string neck (DP430) and bridge (DP431) pickups, each on its own 500K custom-taper volume, into a 250K custom-taper master tone with a .033 µF capacitor and a Switchcraft two-conductor jack. Each pickup's black and white leads are joined.

“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • Sheet title: Colossal 5-String Bass. "This wiring is for DiMarzio Colossal 5-string neck and bridge pickups."
  • Each pickup shows RED, WHITE, BLACK, GREEN and BARE leads. BLACK and WHITE end together on one dot beside the pickup; GREEN and BARE go to that pickup's volume casing.
  • Each pickup's RED lead lands on its volume's middle lug. The volumes' bottom lugs are joined by a wire and feed the master tone's middle lug, which also feeds the jack. Each volume's top lug is wired to casing ground. This is transcribed as drawn.
  • The .033µF capacitor (EP1033) sits between the master tone's bottom lug and the tone casing; the tone's top lug is not connected.
  • Ground chain as drawn: neck volume top lug to both the neck and bridge volume casings, bridge volume casing to its top lug, bridge volume top lug to the master tone casing (a ground symbol is drawn on that line). The master tone casing is wired to the jack's lower lug, where TO BRIDGE GROUND also ends.
  • The pot end lugs are not numbered on the sheet: the lug wired to ground is modelled as lug 1 and the other end lug as lug 3.
  • The jack lugs are not labelled on the sheet: tip is the lug fed from the tone, sleeve the lug on the ground wires.

What each position does

SettingThe sourceEngine result
Both pickupsNo selector is drawn: each pickup has its own volume and both reach the jack together.Colossal neck (DP430) stand-in (both coils) and Colossal bridge (DP431) stand-in (both coils) in parallel.

Not simulated: this circuit is drawn for reference only.

  • The engine classifies the master tone as a volume because its wiper is wired straight to the jack tip, so volumeMutes fails on a correct circuit and tone behaviour is not verified; see ruleExceptions.
  • Each pickup feeds its volume's middle lug with the output taken from an end lug; the engine's volume reading is not verified.
  • The engine finds both pickups in parallel at the jack, matching the drawing, but the board is published topology-only.
  • Each Colossal pickup is modelled as a generic four-conductor humbucker; its bass construction and hum cancelling are not modelled.
  • The source's custom-taper pots are not reproduced: the stand-in pots use a standard audio taper, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.
  • Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • With both volumes up, both pickups should read across the jack in parallel.
  • Each joined BLACK–WHITE pair should read open to ground.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
