“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • Sheet legend: 'The standard Ibanez wiring for 2 humbuckers. The 5-way Ibanez HH OEM switch is wired Position 1 = Neck; Position 2 = Neck Parallel; Position 3 = Neck & Bridge; Position 4 = Inside Coils; Position 5 = Bridge.'
  • The switch is labelled 'IBANEZ OEM SWITCH' and is drawn from the side with its 8 lugs in a row. The lugs are numbered 1-8 left to right as drawn; lug 4 (to the volume) and lug 8 are the commons.
  • Ibanez publishes no contact chart for this switch. Its contacts come from Atheris Pickguards' measured trace map of the opened switch ('Ibanez 3PS1SC5 / COR-TEK 2502N'), which numbers its positions in reverse (its Pos1 = bridge humbucker, Pos5 = neck humbucker). Ibanez's RG2620E factory wiring diagram (RG2620E-CBK-00-02, 2006) wires the 8 lugs with the same roles as this sheet and the map: lug 1 bridge red, lug 2 a neck lead jumpered to lug 7, lug 3 neck red, lug 4 to the volume, lug 5 the bridge series link, lug 6 ground, lug 8 neck black.
  • Lug orientation check: with lugs 1-8 read left to right as drawn, the engine reproduces the legend in all five positions. Read in the reverse order, the volume lug would not be a common and the legend fails in every position, so the drawn left-to-right order is the one used.
  • The neck pickup is wired with its RED to lug 3, WHITE to lug 2, BLACK to lug 8, and GREEN and BARE to the volume casing. A white jumper joins lug 2 to lug 7.
  • The bridge pickup is wired with its RED to lug 1, its BLACK and WHITE together to lug 5, and its GREEN and BARE to the volume casing. Lug 6 is wired to the volume casing.
  • The volume's top lug is wired to the volume casing and on to the tone casing, which is drawn to a ground symbol. The tone's signal enters at its middle lug from the volume's bottom (input) lug; the capacitor sits between the tone's bottom lug and the tone casing. The tone's top lug is drawn unconnected.
  • The output jack is a 'SWITCHCRAFT® OUTPUT JACK (2-CONDUCTOR) EP1301'. 'TO BRIDGE GROUND' ends on the jack sleeve, which also takes the wire from the tone casing.
  • The sheet labels the pickups only 'NECK PICKUP' and 'BRIDGE PICKUP'; a generic DiMarzio-colour four-conductor humbucker stands in for each.

Not simulated: this circuit is drawn for reference only.

  • Topology only, because the switch contacts come from a third-party trace map rather than an Ibanez chart (see below). The selector carries the printed legend as selectorByPosition (1 neck, 2 neck parallel, 3 neck and bridge, 4 inside coils, 5 bridge), and the engine matches it in all five positions: 1 neck humbucker; 2 neck coils in parallel; 3 both humbuckers in parallel; 4 one neck coil and one bridge coil in parallel; 5 bridge humbucker.
  • The switch contacts come from a third-party measured trace map (Atheris Pickguards, Ibanez 3PS1SC5 / COR-TEK 2502N), cross-checked against the lug roles on Ibanez's RG2620E factory diagram; Ibanez publishes no contact chart.
  • Which coil is 'inside' is not modelled: in position 4 the engine keeps the neck's white/green coil and the bridge's red/black coil; the stand-ins do not record which coil sits nearer the other pickup.
  • The source's custom-taper pots are not reproduced: both pots use the catalog pot's taper, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.
  • Both pickups are generic four-conductor humbuckers; hum and tone describe the generic model, and pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • Position 1: continuity from jack tip to sleeve through the whole neck humbucker only.
  • Position 2: the neck's two coils in parallel between tip and sleeve (lower reading than position 1).
  • Position 3: both humbuckers in parallel.
  • Position 4: one coil of each pickup in parallel.
  • Position 5: continuity through the whole bridge humbucker only.
  • With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve read as a short in every position.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
