DiMarzio wiring

DiMarzio Ernie Ball Music Man Eddie Van Halen 2 wiring: two pickups, on-on-on selector board, volume

Neck pickup · Bridge pickup · DPDT on/on/on mini switch (EP1108) on the EBMM board · 500K volume

DiMarzio's Ernie Ball Music Man Eddie Van Halen 2 wiring for two-conductor pickups: each pickup's WHITE goes to the selector board, its BLACK and BARE to the board's ground copper, and the board feeds a 500K custom-taper volume and the output jack. There is no tone control.

“Example part” means any part with the same value and lugs will do; the source does not name a brand. “Generic” stands in for an unspecified pickup: check your own pickup's lead colours before you solder.

Specific to this wiring

  • Sheet title: 'Ernie Ball® Music Man® Eddie Van Halen 2'. 'This wiring is based on the original 2 conductor pickups. The current pickups are now 4 conductor.'
  • This sheet does not name the selector and prints no position legend. An earlier DiMarzio revision of the same sheet (EVH Wiring_Update_FNL_v1, (c) 2020) labels it 'DPDT MINI SWITCH - 3 POSITION (ON/ON/ON) EP1108' and draws each row's two lugs jumpered. On this sheet the same switch sits on a board: each row's two switch-pin slots are joined by a trace to one solder pad on the left.
  • The top-left pad takes the bridge WHITE, the middle-left pad feeds the volume, and the bottom-left pad takes the neck WHITE. The three right-hand pads are one ground copper shape: the top pad takes the bridge BLACK and BARE, the bottom pad the neck BLACK and BARE, and the middle pad is wired to the volume casing.
  • Neither sheet says which lever direction is position 1. The positions here are named by function from the catalog EP1108 contacts: position 1 = neck, position 2 = both pickups, position 3 = bridge (the catalog EP1108 HH_SELECTOR variant).
  • The volume's top lug is wired to the volume casing and on to the jack sleeve. The output jack is a 'SWITCHCRAFT® OUTPUT JACK (2-CONDUCTOR) EP1301'; 'TO BRIDGE GROUND' ends on the jack sleeve.
  • The pickups are drawn unnamed ('NECK PICKUP', 'BRIDGE PICKUP') with WHITE, BLACK and BARE leads.

Connections

In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.

  • Neither this sheet nor the v1 revision says which lever direction is position 1; the lever mapping is by function.
  • The switch contacts are the catalog EP1108 table; the v1 sheet names the part but prints no contact chart.
  • The source's custom-taper volume is not reproduced: the pot uses the catalog pot's taper, so settings between the knob ends are approximate.
  • Each pickup is simulated as a generic two-conductor pickup; the humbucker's hum-cancelling construction and its resistance are not modelled, so no numeric meter readings are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • Position 1: continuity from jack tip to sleeve through the neck pickup only.
  • Position 2: both pickups in parallel between tip and sleeve.
  • Position 3: continuity through the bridge pickup only.
  • With the volume at zero, tip and sleeve read as a short in every position.

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
