Specific to this wiring
- Title: 1 HUMBUCKER | 1 SINGLE COIL 1 HUMBUCKER | 1 VOLUME (push/pull coil split) 5 WAY BLADE.
- ADDED FROM OTHER SEYMOUR DUNCAN SOURCES: the current sheet does not draw the neck humbucker's green or bare lead. Seymour Duncan's colour-code sheet (Seymour Duncan pickup colour-code sheet, https://www.seymourduncan.com/images/wiring-diagrams/WD_Pickup_Color_Codes.pdf, saved as docs/wiring-diagrams/handoff/online/seymour-duncan_HSH_5W_1VppSPL/WD_Pickup_Color_Codes.pdf) gives green = South start = Ground and says 'For ALL pickup types the bare wire goes to ground---ALWAYS'. Seymour Duncan's 2006 original of the one-tone sibling sheet (Seymour Duncan, 'HSH, 1 Volume, 1 Tone, 5 Way Switch, Push/Pull' (Copyright 2006 Seymour Duncan/Basslines), http://www.seymourduncan.com/pdfs/support/schematics/hsh_1v_1t_5w_pushpull.pdf (Wayback 2012 copy), saved as docs/wiring-diagrams/handoff/online/seymour-duncan_HSH_5W_1VppSPL_1T/wayback-oldsite-hsh_1v_1t_5w_pushpull.pdf (crop oldsite-2006-neck-green-bare-crop.png)) runs the neck green and bare together to the volume Solder spot. Those two leads (w4, w5) are added to the volume Solder spot (drawn here at the upper spot with the bridge green and bare; both spots are on the same casing); every other wire is as drawn on the current sheet.
- The blade's wired row carries, from its bottom lug: the common (to the volume's first lug), neck black, middle white, bridge black (the leads are labelled 'neck black', 'middle white', 'bridge black'). The blade's other row is empty.
- The neck red & white go together to the middle lug of one push/pull column and the bridge red & white to the middle lug of the other. The two lugs nearest the pot are jumpered together and wired to the volume Solder spot; the two lugs at the other end are empty.
- The volume carries two Solder spots. The upper one takes the bridge green and bare, the push/pull ground and the wire labelled 'Bridge ground'; the lower one takes the middle black, the volume's bent third lug and the wire to the jack Sleeve.
- There is no tone control on this sheet.
- The source does not number the blade's lugs or positions; the lugs are mapped by what they do (bridge, bridge + middle, middle, middle + neck, neck).
- NOTE printed on the sheet: If your neck & middle pickups are Fender pickups, then you will need to reverse the GREEN &BLACK wires on the Duncan.
- Legend: Solder = location for ground (earth) connections. Jack: Tip (hot output); Sleeve (ground). The inner, circular portion of the jack.
- Values printed: Volume 250k (or 500k).
Understand this wiring
- Seymour Duncan humbucker wire colors
See the pickup, recognise its two halves, and learn where each coloured wire goes.
- Seymour Duncan coil splitting explained
A humbucker has two coils. See how a switch lets you use just one of them.
- Reading Seymour Duncan push/pull switch diagrams
Turning the knob and pulling it do different jobs. See the actual part, then try its switch connections.
Connections
In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

What each position does
| Setting | The source | Engine result |
|---|---|---|
| Position 1 · push: bridge | Knob down: both humbuckers' red & white pairs sit on the empty push/pull lugs, so each humbucker is full. | Bridge humbucker (both coils). |
| Position 1 · pull: bridge split | Knob up: both red & white pairs join the jumpered, grounded push/pull lugs, splitting whichever humbucker is selected. | Bridge humbucker (split to one coil). |
| Position 2 · push: bridge + middle | Knob down: both humbuckers' red & white pairs sit on the empty push/pull lugs, so each humbucker is full. | Middle single coil and Bridge humbucker (both coils) in parallel. |
| Position 2 · pull: bridge split + middle | Knob up: both red & white pairs join the jumpered, grounded push/pull lugs, splitting whichever humbucker is selected. | Middle single coil and Bridge humbucker (split to one coil) in parallel. |
| Position 3 · push: middle | Knob down: both humbuckers' red & white pairs sit on the empty push/pull lugs, so each humbucker is full. | Middle single coil. |
| Position 3 · pull: middle | Knob up: both red & white pairs join the jumpered, grounded push/pull lugs, splitting whichever humbucker is selected. | Middle single coil. |
| Position 4 · push: middle + neck | Knob down: both humbuckers' red & white pairs sit on the empty push/pull lugs, so each humbucker is full. | Neck humbucker (both coils) and Middle single coil in parallel. |
| Position 4 · pull: middle + neck split | Knob up: both red & white pairs join the jumpered, grounded push/pull lugs, splitting whichever humbucker is selected. | Neck humbucker (split to one coil) and Middle single coil in parallel. |
| Position 5 · push: neck | Knob down: both humbuckers' red & white pairs sit on the empty push/pull lugs, so each humbucker is full. | Neck humbucker (both coils). |
| Position 5 · pull: neck split | Knob up: both red & white pairs join the jumpered, grounded push/pull lugs, splitting whichever humbucker is selected. | Neck humbucker (split to one coil). |
Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.
- The neck humbucker's green and bare are not drawn on the current sheet; they are added from other Seymour Duncan sources (see notes).
- Which shaft position grounds the red & white pairs follows the usual push/pull behaviour (pulled joins the middle lugs to the lugs nearest the pot); the sheet does not say which way splits.
- The 250k value is used; the sheet also allows 500k.
- Custom tapers are not reproduced; pots are simulated as linear.
- Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.
Before you solder
Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.
Check before plugging in
- Knob down: in each blade position the meter across the jack reads the full pickup or pickup pair selected.
- Knob up: both humbuckers' red & white read ground; positions 1 and 5 drop to one coil's reading.
- Neck green and bare read ground at the volume casing (the added leads).
Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
