HSH, 5-way blade, push/pull split volume and tone

Humbucker · Single coil · Humbucker · 5-way blade · Push/pull volume (coil split) · One tone

Seymour Duncan sheet: humbuckers in the neck and bridge and a single coil in the middle on a 5-way blade, with a 250k (or 500k) push/pull volume that splits both humbuckers, a 250k tone and a .047 cap. The neck humbucker's green and bare are not drawn on the current sheet and are added from Seymour Duncan's 2006 original of it.

Specific to this wiring

  • Title: 1 HUMBUCKER | 1 SINGLE COIL| 1 HUMBUCKER 1 VOLUME push/pull coil split | 1 TONE |5 WAY BLADE.
  • ADDED FROM ANOTHER SEYMOUR DUNCAN SOURCE: the current sheet does not draw the neck humbucker's green or bare lead. Seymour Duncan's own 2006 original of this sheet (Seymour Duncan, 'HSH, 1 Volume, 1 Tone, 5 Way Switch, Push/Pull' (Copyright 2006 Seymour Duncan/Basslines), http://www.seymourduncan.com/pdfs/support/schematics/hsh_1v_1t_5w_pushpull.pdf (Wayback 2012 copy), saved as docs/wiring-diagrams/handoff/online/seymour-duncan_HSH_5W_1VppSPL_1T/wayback-oldsite-hsh_1v_1t_5w_pushpull.pdf (crop oldsite-2006-neck-green-bare-crop.png)) runs the neck green and bare together to the volume pot Solder spot, alongside the bridge green and bare. Those two leads (w4, w5) are added from it; every other wire is as drawn on the current sheet.
  • The blade's wired row carries, from its bottom lug: the common (to the volume's first lug), neck black, middle white, bridge black (the leads are labelled 'neck black', 'middle white', 'bridge black'). The blade's other row is empty.
  • The neck red & white go together to the middle lug of one push/pull column and the bridge red & white to the middle lug of the other. The two lugs nearest the pot are jumpered together and wired to the volume Solder spot; the two lugs at the other end are empty.
  • Bridge green and bare, the middle black, the push/pull ground and the volume's bent third lug meet at the volume Solder spot; the volume casing is wired to the tone Solder spot, which also takes the wire labelled 'Bridge ground'.
  • The volume's first lug also feeds the tone's outer lug (tone drawn lugs up); the tone's middle lug carries the .047 cap to the tone Solder spot.
  • The source does not number the blade's lugs or positions; the lugs are mapped by what they do (bridge, bridge + middle, middle, middle + neck, neck).
  • NOTE printed on the sheet: If your neck & middle pickups are Fender pickups, then you will need to reverse the GREEN &BLACK wires on the Duncan.
  • Legend: Solder = location for ground (earth) connections. Jack: Tip (hot output); Sleeve (ground). The inner, circular portion of the jack.
  • Values printed: Volume 250k (or 500k); Tone 250k; .047 cap.

Connections

In soldering order: grounds first, then the switch, the pickups and the signal path.

Checked with the Tinkercaster wiring engine against the switching the source describes.

  • The neck humbucker's green and bare are not drawn on the current sheet; they are added from other Seymour Duncan sources (see notes).
  • Which shaft position grounds the red & white pairs follows the usual push/pull behaviour (pulled joins the middle lugs to the lugs nearest the pot); the sheet does not say which way splits.
  • The 250k value is used; the sheet also allows 500k.
  • Custom tapers are not reproduced; pots are simulated as linear.
  • Pickup resistance is not specified, so no numeric meter readings are given.

Before you solder

Ticks are kept in this browser only, as a reminder. They are not a check of your joints. New to soldering? Read the soldering cheat sheet.

Check before plugging in

  • Knob down: in each blade position the meter across the jack reads the full pickup or pickup pair selected.
  • Knob up: both humbuckers' red & white read ground; positions 1 and 5 drop to one coil's reading.
  • Neck green and bare read ground at the volume casing (the added leads).

Measure across the output jack with a multimeter on its resistance range. No exact readings are given where the source does not specify the pickups.
